BBC Proms 2018

Client
BBC

Following on from the success of our work on the previous year's BBC Proms Rebrand, BBC Creatives and BBC Proms came to us to work on 2018's brand refresh.

Keeping the core idea of music transforming our lives, we came up with a new hero transformational element that will be featured on this year's main book cover, TV promo and other digital/print materials.

On-Air Package Update

This year, we focused on creating a new sequence for the second half of the TV promo that we’ve done last year. When the lights burst out of Royal Albert Hall it transform the sky into a flock of marshmallow birds. This year, we wanted to push the concept further and give the light (music) a more powerful and lasting effect. So we created a multi-level transformation where the light carves the wooden trees into musical string instruments and the wooden shavings then turn into butterflies.

Book Covers and Key Art

It was important to keep the illustration simple, graphic easy to read while keeping the handcrafted feel of a miniature theatrical stage model.

Print, Digital and Event

Early Development

One of the main challenges was to nail the tree-instrument transformation. It was crucial for us to show the role that light plays in this. Throughout the whole TV promo and title sequence the light is the conductor of a big orchestra. We decided to give it a secondary role as its power gets stronger. This time it is a sculptor that created these beautiful handcrafted string instruments.
