For HSBC’s global conference, Brunswick Creative commissioned two opening films around a bold internal ambition: to create the healthiest human system in financial services.

Both films needed to feel unmistakably HSBC, while doing two different jobs. One looked back at the foundations that brought the organisation here. The other looked ahead, asking what a more human, connected future could look like.

Built from the Detail

Rather than reaching for familiar financial imagery, the creative starting point came from something already hiding in plain sight: the banknote.

Its fine engravings, layered patterns and precise lines became the raw material for a visual world that could carry both heritage and change. The challenge was to make those details feel less fixed on the page and more alive on screen, shifting between structure, movement and emotion.

/ Purpose Film

Foundations in Motion

The first film looked to HSBC’s history and the people who helped shape it.

References to past leaders were woven through a world of crisp lines, intricate patterns and evolving forms. Details drawn from the language of currency gathered, fragmented and reformed, creating a sense of progress built on strong foundations.

It was a film about legacy, without standing still.

/ Healthy Human System Film

A System That Grows

The second film took the same visual language somewhere more human.

Banknote patterns began to soften, connect and grow, gradually forming a flower at the centre of the film. It became a simple visual expression of HSBC’s ambition: a system that can be rigorous and high performing, while still making room for people to thrive.

Employee voices brought the idea back to real experience, adding warmth and perspective to the abstract visual world. The result was a more optimistic counterpart to the first film, rooted in the same craft but looking firmly ahead.
